Raphael Raffel Croissant sofa for Maison Honoré, Paris 1970s

About the Item

Raphaël Raffel (1912-2000) studied at the École des Beaux Arts and became a renown interior designer from the 1940s to the end of the twentieth century. His shop in Paris attracted a group of dedicated collectors including Josephine Baker. This sofa’s organic roundedness evokes bodily sensations including edibility which some have likened to a banana or bean, as well as a croissant. It was designed for Maison Honoré, Paris with each sofa being made-to-order. This has made the piece a highly sought-after item of design history. The original leather from this sofa has recently been restored and conditioned to preserve its integrity, though it still shows a lot of patina of use.
